On the Origin of the Metallicity Dependence in Dynamically Formed Extragalactic Low-mass X-ray Binaries

چکیده
Globular clusters (GCs) effectively produce dynamically-formed low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). Observers detect ∼ 100 times more LMXBs per stellar mass in GCs compared to stars in the fields of galaxies. It has also been observationally established that metal-rich GCs are about 3 times more likely to contain an X-ray source than their metal-poor counterparts. Recent observations have shown that this ratio holds in extragalactic GCs for all bright X-ray sources with LX between 2 × 1037 and 5 × 1038 erg s−1. In this Letter, we propose that the observed metallicity dependence of LMXBs in extragalactic GCs can be explained by the differences in the number densities and average masses of red giants in populations of different metallicities. Red giants serve as seeds for the dynamical production of bright LMXBs via two channels – binary exchanges and physical collisions – and the increase of the number densities and masses of red giants boost LMXB production, leading to the observed difference. We also discuss a possible effect of the age difference in stellar populations of different metallicities. Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

We report our analysis of a Chandra X-ray observation of the rich globular cluster Terzan 5, in which we detect 50 sources to a limiting 1.0-6 keV X-ray luminosity of 3 × 10 ergs s within the half-mass radius of the cluster. Thirty-three of these have LX > 10 32 ergs s, the largest number yet seen in any globular cluster. In addition to the quiescent low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB, identified by W...
متن کاملLow Mass X-ray Binaries and Metallicity Dependence: Story of Failures
Observations of galactic and extra-galactic globular clusters have shown that on average metal-rich clusters are ∼ 3 times as likely to contain a bright X-ray source than their metal-poor counterparts. We propose that this can be explained by taking into account the difference in the stellar structure of main sequence donors with masses between ∼ 0.85M⊙ and ∼ 1.25M⊙ at different metallicities. ...
متن کاملStudy of populations of low-mass X-ray binaries in elliptical galaxies
The aim of this thesis is to study the environmental dependence of populations of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in early-type galaxies. The dissertation is mainly based on archival data of the Chandra observatory whose unprecedented sub-arcsec angular resolution made it possible to resolve individual compact sources in nearby galaxies. The Chandra data is complemented by the infrared data of ...
متن کاملClues to Globular Cluster Evolution from Multiwavelength Observations of Extragalactic Systems
We present a study of the globular cluster (GC) systems of nearby elliptical and S0 galaxies at a variety of wavelengths from the X-ray to the infrared. Our analysis shows that roughly half of the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), that are the luminous tracers of accreting neutron star or black hole systems, are in clusters. There is a surprisingly strong correlation between the LMXB frequency a...
